Last week, Republicans introduced their long awaited repeal and replace alternative to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and reaction has been pretty disastrous on both sides of the aisle. Today, the Congressional Budget Office released their findings on the plan and confirmed that more than 24 million Americans will lose their healthcare coverage by 2026. As if that isn’t bad enough, Reuter published a story this evening saying this GOP plan is just one giant tax cut for the ultra-wealthy.

Needless to say, this is going to be the hot topic this week as votes in the House and Senate are scheduled within the next couple of weeks.

Key Information

Learn how repealing the ACA is going to impact your congressional district. This Democratic Staff Memo from the House of Representatives outlines the impact to every congressional district in the country. North Carolina districts start on page 305. There is some good stuff in here. Understanding the impact is important when calling your representatives and this will help you be prepared. Did you know Rep Holding’s District 2 has seen uninsured Americans drop by 50% since the ACA was enacted? The bigger question is does Rep Holding know that? That is quite an impact!

You can also scroll through this Google doc that gives a breakdown of the population percentage likely to be impacted by any repeal as well.

Indivisible has also put together a comprehensive backgrounder on saving the ACA. It contains a breakdown of the American Health Care Act, scripts, talking points, an explanation of the legislative process, etc. All important details to understand as you start making phone calls.

NPR is also compiling a tracker to see where Members of Congress stand on the Republican bill.

What You Can Do – Call, Call, Call

Peter Wilbur with R.I.S.E Together created some great scripts that are specifics to North Carolina legislatures based on their currently stated positions. Use these scripts or modify them, but it’s a critical point in time to make a call. Our representatives NEED to hear from us right now. These calls make a difference. We need to be loud about this or else there is a real risk that millions of Americans will no longer be eligible for or will be able to afford health care.
