Wow. What a first week with the new administration. I think all of our heads are spinning and there is a lot to absorb. Don’t forget to give yourself some downtime and unplug from social media for a bit. The news is overwhelming and self-care is critical.

Key activities taking place this week:

  • Monday: Women’s March NC is calling for rallies outside the offices of Senate Judiciary Committee members – Sen. Thom Tillis for North Carolinians. Details can be found here.
  • Tuesday: #ResistTrumpTuesday events taking place across the state. Details and locations can be found here.
  • Wednesday: Join us for a Stronger NC Meet and Greet in downtown Raleigh. This will be our first gathering of “Stronger Drinks” to socialize, put faces with names and posts, and share our common goals!
  • It looks like more local marches and protests are being planned for next weekend. Our Events page is continuously updated, so check there often for the latest happenings.

Calls to Action this week:

  • Cabinet Confirmations – stop Sessions and DeVos
    • Continue to call Burr and Tillis’ offices on Monday and Tuesday to put pressure on them to reject both Sessions and DeVos this week. There are questions on whether Sessions consulted Trump on the refugee ban Executive Order, unclear if that will impact his confirmation vote. There also appears to be increasing pressure on the DeVos nomination, so we need to keep making phone calls. US News & World Report has a strong summary of why she is not qualified.
  • Oppose Trump’s Executive Order banning refugees from the US (from Jen Hofmann’s weekly action list)
    • Action 1: Oppose religious discrimination by contacting the White House. Comment lines are closed, so email at: https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact
      • Script: I oppose the executive order banning entry to the US by green card-carrying residents, dual passport-holding residents, legal citizens, and vetted, peaceful refugees. This action is unconstitutional and unamerican.
      • Tweet: @realDonaldTrump Banning legal residents is unconstitutional and rejecting immigrants is unamerican. #revoke
    • Action 2: Defend the rights of legal immigrants to our country. Donate to the National Immigration Law Center: https://www.nilc.org/
    • Action 3: Ask your elected officials to publicly oppose this executive order. Call your three Members of Congress (1 representative and Burr, Tillis) (lookup)Script: Hi! I am a constituent from _ZIP code _ and oppose the executive order on banning refugees and legal residents. Can you tell me if _MoC’s name_ has publicly opposed this action? If not, can you tell me when s/he will?
  • RSVP for the HKonJ Moral Monday march taking place on Feb 11. This is being organized by the NC NAACP to support moral issues important to the progressive cause. Details can be found on the NC NAACP’s website.
