Governor Cooper has just issued the first veto of his governorship on HB100.

The GOP super-majority in the NCGA is trying to increase its power by reducing the power of the other two branches of government.  HB 100 would make trial court judge races partisan, motivating the NCGOP to gerrymander judicial elections to ensure that the NCGOP can control district and superior courts. This bill will weaken the judicial branch and be particularly problematic at the trial court judge level. Trial court judges are the nuts and bolts of the court system hearing civil and criminal cases. These are not idealogical judges and partisanship does not belong in their courtrooms.

The judicial branch is the only “brake” we have on the NCGOP’s runaway power.

Six GOP House members voted against it (listed below), so they are ideal candidates to put pressure on to uphold the veto.
