Three big issues on tap for this week – HB2 deadline with NCAA, Guns in NC churches, and House Intelligence Committee hearing on Russia connections.

HB2 Repeal

This week the NCAA sports committees are making championship site selections for 2018-2022. The NCAA said in a statement, “once the sites are selected … those decisions are final.”

In response to the pending deadline, the North Carolina Sports Association (representing 27 NC counties that recruit and promote major sporting events), sent a letter to the state’s legislature saying the state could lose an estimated $250 million in economic impact based on 133 bids submitted to the NCAA by North Carolina cities, colleges and universities.

Comments from Roy Williams, UNC Men’s Basketball head coach: “It shouldn’t be just about athletic events. It should be about what is right and wrong. What we have now is wrong.”  http://www.newsobserver.com/news/politics-government/state-politics/article139949358.html

Action: Call your state representatives and demand that they bring to vote a full, clean repeal of HB2. No matter how many times you have already called about this issue, call and call again. This bill is hurting our LGBTQ citizens and it’s hurting our state.

HB174: Reinstate the “congregation opt-in” Provision

An important message to share from North Carolinians Against Gun Violence. NC House session begins 7pm Monday night.

“We are continuing to try and stop the expansion of guns in congregations that share a space with schools. HB 174 will be on the House floor this Monday night. The bill would allow handguns on educational property that is the location of both a school and a place of religious worship outside the operating hours of the school.
This is unacceptable and must be changed.

This is where you come in. Between now and Monday night we need you to call your representative and tell him or her to fix HB174. You can find out who represents you here.

Here is the message: “the Judiciary Committee had it correct the first time when they said that congregations that share space with schools need to opt in to allow people to carry guns. Please reinstate the “congregation opt-in” provision on the house floor when HB 174 is debated.”

Action: Please make the quick phone call tomorrow and send a personal email to your NC House Representatives to make an amendment to this bill.

House Intelligence Committee Hearing on Russia

Minority chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Adam Schiff is asking the public to demand that this week’s hearing be open the the public. Majority leader Nunes has decided it will be now be closed to the public and is also refusing to release information. Since information will be discussed about the Trump Campaign’s ties to Russia, it is imperative that the American Public know whether or not the Trump and his associates committed treason.

Action: Call Republican members of the committee and show your support for an open hearing for the public.
