We have been focusing on Voting Rights and Fair Elections this month. Why? Because voter suppression is on the rise and it disproportionally affects minorities, the poor and the elderly.

When politicians manipulate the machinery of elections to entrench their own political power, we lose our ability to make the changes we want to see in the world. As Rev. Barber said, some things are not left versus right, but right versus wrong.

Today’s voter suppression tactics are sly, subtle and don’t lend themselves to attention-grabbing headlines. Voter disenfranchisement breeds cynicism, which in turn leads to less voter turnout. The vote-oppressors think citizens won’t notice democracy’s “death by a thousand cuts” until it is too late.

This video from the ACLU explains the last 10 years of this issue really well.

Voting Rights: 1965 to Now

Voter suppression is on the rise, so we launched a 50-state campaign to expand the right to vote. Know your history and get ready to fight back.

The ACLU just launched a 50 state campaign to protect voting rights across the country. Let People Vote intends to ensure that every American’s right to vote is protected. The goals of the movement are to “strengthen our democracy by lengthening early voting periods, making voter registration more accessible, establishing independent and nonpartisan redistricting commissions, restoring voting rights for disenfranchised communities and continuing to combat attempts at voter suppression, such as discriminatory voter ID requirements and voter purges.”
