We have all been horrified watching the natural disaster from Hurricane Harvey unfold in Texas over the last 10 days. Americans come together in times of tragedy and what we have witnessed on the ground in Houston is inspiring. So many of you still want to help, so we thought we’d offer up some opportunities to align with our focus for the month of September: Education.
We Are Teachers
We Are Teachers has compiled a helpful list of eight different ways for teachers (and parents) in North Carolina to help their counterparts in Texas. A few we particularly like include:
- Have Your Students Do a Fundraiser Through WE Schools: When you sign up through the WE Schools website, Allstate Insurance will match donations up to $250,000. A great opportunity to double students efforts to help in Texas!
- Fill a Food Backpack for a Kid: The Houston Food Bank is running a backpack buddies program to make sure kids don’t go home hungry for the weekend. Now more than ever they need your help.
Teachers of Tomorrow
Teachers of Tomorrow is coordinating an Adopt a Texas Classroom initiative to help supply schools in Texas and Louisiana hardest hit by Hurricane Harvey. Fill out a form and you will be connected with a classroom in need. This is a great project for classes, PTAs, community organizations or other large groups who are interested in making sure a classroom has all it needs when classes start up again in a couple of weeks.
Next week we’ll be back with calls to action to help North Carolina’s education system, but this week is a time to think of our fellow citizens in Texas.
