Action = Change
Before we get started, the first thing you need to know is who you are trying to influence. Public officials aren’t just the people who vote on laws and make decisions. They were voted into office, but ultimately, they work for us. It doesn’t matter if it’s at the local, state or national level, “we the people” have the right to make our voices heard. In order to do their jobs, officials need to know what we think, how we feel and why we react to their decisions.
In North Carolina, you can use the Who Represents Me feature on the General Assembly’s website to find out who represents your district. Type in your address, and your district number for the NC House, NC Senate and US House of Representatives will appear. Using the drop down menu, select your district and the site will take you directly to your Representative, Senator or Congressman’s website with all of their contact details. Be sure to add them to your contact list and speed dial. It will come in handy when you are ready to make a call!
In the US Senate, North Carolina is represented by Senators Richard Burr and Thom Tillis. As of January 2017, North Carolina’s governor is Roy Cooper. Contact details for all of these gentlemen can be found on their respective websites.
It is also helpful to learn more about your precinct. A precinct is a small geographical area within each county, and each one has a polling place where residents go to vote. As of June 2016, there are 202 precincts in Wake County alone. Several precincts are grouped into districts (not congressional districts). Precincts are organized differently for each political party. The Democratic party has precinct chairs, and district chairs as well. If your precinct isn’t organized, maybe you know someone willing to be a chair? More informatioin about precinct maps, demographics and organization can be found at North Wake County Democrats and the Precinct Project.
