Raleigh | Panel Discussion on Independent Courts in NC with Robert Orr

August 29 @ 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Do Independent Courts Matter in North Carolina?

Jen Sikes, Chair of the Judicial Crew, and her crew have been planning an educational event to delve into exactly that question.  Modeling the format on the very successful event Rep. Joe John held in late May, they have assembled an outstanding group of former judges to speak to this question.

Our panelists will be:
Former NC Court of Appeals Judge Linda Stephens
Former NC Supreme Court Justice Patricia Timmons-Goodson
Former NC Court of Appeals Judge Doug McCullough

Our moderator will be:
Former NC Supreme Court Justice Robert Orr

When you think about the kind of issues we will be discussing, consider the questions below as a guide:

  • What exactly is the role of the judicial branch in our government?
  • Why is the judicial branch “special” in needing to be “beyond politics”?  Is that realistic?
  • Are conditions really so different now than in the past?  If they are changing, why is that?
  • How does money influence this situation?
  • Why should citizens be concerned when judges, courts, and their decisions are attacked by politicians?
  • Isn’t this just how a democracy works?  Should not judges who make unpopular decisions be held to account before voters?
  • Why shouldn’t voters cast their votes on the basis of a judicial candidate’s political party or political record or political comments?  What else should guide voting?
  • Are their better ways than elections to choose judges?  What are the pros and cons of the the different selection methods?
  • What actions would you suggest folks take to protect judicial independence and to ensure qualified, fair judges in our State?

This event will be open to the general  public and publicized widely online and off.  It will be held at the Junior League of Raleigh Center for Community Leadership located at 711 Hillsborough Street.  The doors will open at 6:30PM with the program starting at 6:45PM.

Due to the esteemed nature of our guests we intend to invite media to be present.

Please mark your calendars now to ensure you are able to attend.  We will need a number of Politicas to help us pull this event off smoothly.  Even if you are not on the Programs or Judicial crews, you are welcome to volunteer to assist us that evening.  Contact Dana at dana@politicanc.org.
