The News & Observer is hosting our first Community Voices event of 2019. Our topic for this session is the 2019 General Assembly.
The new year has brought a new landscape for North Carolina’s legislative politics. Democrats gained ground in both the state House and Senate in the November election and Republicans lost their veto-proof majority. Will the two parties compromise under threat of Gov. Cooper’s veto, or will gridlock prevail? What does each party want and what do they want in common? Tour this new landscape as our panel discusses what’s ahead for the 2019 legislative session.
Jane Pinsky: director of the NC Coalition for Lobbying & Government Reform
Rep. David Lewis (R-Harnett County): vice chair of the House Appropriations Committee and chairman of the Ethics and Elections Law Committee.
Sen. Jay Chaudhuri (D-Wake County): member of the Senate Appropriations Committee
Lee Lilley: director of Legislative Affairs at Office of the Governor
