October 3rd, Lakewood Elementary, 6pm
Dr. Hall and his right-wing supporters in state government are trying to speedily push through a private and unaccountable takeover of our local schools. We will not let them.
All six school communities currently under attack are comprised of smiling, learning, and growing young people; dedicated staff who commit their lives and hearts far beyond a forty hour work week; and loving and trusting parents who want the best for their kids.
Two of these elementary schools, Glen and Lakewood, belong to us right here in Durham. We intend to keep them.
On this coming Tuesday (October 3rd), defend Durham Schools and the Friends of Lakewood PTA are hosting a two-hour community meeting in response to this private takeover attempt. Click here to RSVP to this critical community meeting!
The meeting will run from 6-8pm at Lakewood Elementary. English to Spanish interpretation will be provided. Child care and food will be available.
At approximately 5:30pm — just before the meeting — Defend Durham Schools will hold a press conference outside Lakewood Elementary. Students, parents, educators, and community members are encouraged to join us to demonstrate our support for local control of our schools.
Click here to RSVP to this critical community meeting! We need you there because is our job to listen to and magnify parent voices to ensure that Mr. Hall and DPI hears them. Based on how DPI officials handled their business yesterday at Glenn Elementary, it is clear that state officials have not made plans to really engage to learn about the parents and families each school serves. The so-called ‘meeting’ with with parents about taking over their school was scheduled on three days notice, announced via robo call, and held during the school / workday. Click here to see parent reactions after that meeting.
Thank you for your continued support; we will send additional action steps in the coming days by email, text, and by posting information on DefendDurhamSchools.org and the Defend Durham Schools Facebook page.
