Chapel Hill | Stand With the UNC Center for Civil Rights; Rally and March

September 7 @ 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

#DefendCivilRights: A Week of Action in Solidarity with the UNC Center for Civil Rights

On September 8, the UNC Board of Governors will vote on whether to ban the UNC Center for Civil Rights from litigating, ending its work. Even as University officials protect Silent Sam, a monument to white supremacy, BOG members attack this living monument to the legacy of racial justice and inclusion left by legendary civil rights lawyer Julius Chambers. Join us for a week of action to save the Center and #DefendCivilRights.

I. Monday–Thursday (9/4-9/7) CALL ON BOG MEMBERS TO VOTE DOWN THE LITIGATION BAN ENDING THE CENTER’S WORK. Call and email members of the Board of Governors and tell them to vote down the litigation ban. Contact information for best members to target will be provided. Tweets and letters to the editor are also encouraged. Use the hashtag #DefendCivilRights.

II. Thursday, 9/7 SOLIDARITY RALLY AND MARCH WITH THE CENTER FOR CIVIL RIGHTS. The rally and march will take place from 3:30– 4:30pm. It will start on the steps of South Building, move to Silent Sam, and finish outside the house of UNC President Margaret Spellings.

III. Friday, 9/8. DEFEND CIVIL RIGHTS: PROTEST THE BOG. Come to the UNC BOG meeting and stand in solidarity with the UNC Center for Civil Rights by bearing witness and protesting the vote on ending the Center’s work. The meeting starts at 9:00am at the Center for School Leadership Development across the parking lot from the Friday Center. Doors will open around 8:45am or earlier.
